Some independent variables cannot be manipulated at all.
For example, if we
want to study how pollution affects
children’s asthma, we might track high and
low pollution
periods in a city, and compare for those times the number
of
visits to emergency rooms for asthma treatment. The independent
variable,
pollution, is measured but not manipulated.
