A correlation cannot prove a theory because theories
can make so many
predictions about relationships among
variables, and we cannot rule out the
possibility that other
factors, not included in the theory, may be responsible.
However, a correlation can negate a theory because a single
failure to predict a
relationship is grounds for questioning the theory.
