Science rests on assumptions. These are ideas that we
accept as true, even
though the idea's validity has not
been scientifically established. They are
accepted, as it were,
on faith, because they are useful in the scientific
enterprise.
One such assumption, that the universe is orderly, predictable,
and
thus knowable, is particularly important in science.
