A rank is a score on an ordinal scale. This means that
it does inform us
about identity (which persons are at
which ranks) and magnitude (the order of
the scores such
as 1st, 2nd, and so on). But rankings do not reflect equal
intervals.
For example, the difference between the student ranked first in
grade
point average and the student ranked second might be far
different from the
distance between the second and the third ranked
students. Also, there is no
absolute zero in the ordinal scale.
