The confounding variable hypothesis asks the
question, "Is some variable other
than the independent
variable responsible for the observed effects on the
dependent variable?" This is not directly tested. Rather,
an assessment is made
as to whether adequate controls
have been utilized to deal with those other
variables. If
controls have been put in place, then we can have greater
confidence that confounding factors have not operated in the research.
