Each level of constraint is appropriate for certain
types of questions about
relationships between variables.
Those relationships may be contingencies,
strength and
direction of association, differences between groups, and
causality. Each research hypothesis specifies the nature
of the relationship
that is expected. Therefore, for any
research hypothesis, there is an
appropriate level of constraint.
