Computing Basic Statistics
Using SPSS for Windows

In this exercise, you will be asked to compute several basic statistics using SPSS for Windows. If your instructor had you compute these statistics manually, you will get to see how much easier they are to compute using a statistical analysis program. Instructions on how to compute the statistics using SPSS for Windows are included in a tutorial elsewhere on this website.

For each of the following data sets, compute the mean, median, mode, variance, and standard deviation.

  1. 6, 9, 3, 7, 4, 6, 3, 6, 7, 5, 6, 9, 4, 6, 8 (answer)

  2. 44, 86, 39, 55, 49, 58, 47, 66, 39, 57 (answer)

  3. 14.3, 22.6, 27.4, 18.8, 21.8, 25.2, 28.1, 20.5 (answer)

For the following data sets, compute the mean, variance, and standard deviation for each variable and the correlation between the two variables.
