The diversity of psychologists' interests is seen in the large number of special interest divisions within the organization. As of June of 2012, there were 56 separate divisions within APA. The number changes periodically as psychologists with similar interests get together and form a new division to support their ongoing work. The number of divisions and the growth in the number of divisions is a testament to the diversity of psychology and the expansion of psychology into new areas of inquiry.
