Computing a Phi Coefficient

If one variable produces nominal data and the other produces ordered data, the appropriate correlation coefficient is the Phi Coefficient. The Phi coefficient is normally used to evaluate relationships between nominal variables. Therefore, you will have to convert your ordered data variable into categories. For example, if you have ranks of 1-20, you might break those into categories by having 1-5 in one category, 6-10 in a second, and so on.
